Interplanetary Magnetic Field: Earth Magnetosphere

Scientific paper

A qualitative picture of convection in the Earth's magnetosphere is discussed for a southern and northern direction of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). The differences in the structure of the interplanetary magnetic field in these two cases are related to fundamentally different processes of reconnection. For a northern direction of the IMF, reconnection of the magnetic lines of force occurs at two neutral points of the magnetic field and is of a significantly three-dimensional nature. For a southern IMF, a two-dimensional picture arises which is similar to reconnection on a line. A complete distribution of the convective motion in the magnetosphere is constructed, and the main features of the observed ionospheric electric field are explained.
