Results are reported for a photographic and spectroscopic study of the nearby giant elliptical galaxy NGC 5128. Observational data on velocities of discrete H II regions and of diffuse H II regions in the dark-lane region, interstellar Na D lines, broad absorption lines, relative intensity variations of the emission lines over the galaxy, and small-scale velocity irregularities in the galaxy are examined. The results are compared with previous velocity studies, and observations of the disk and elliptical components are discussed. The present observations are shown to reinforce the view that NGC 5128 is a giant elliptical galaxy in which is embedded an inclined and rotating disk composed partly of gas and also containing stars. It is concluded that the main radio characteristics of NGC 5128 and the on-going energetic phenomena in the nucleus are a consequence rather than the cause of the unusual structural features of the galaxy as a whole.
