In the framework of general relativistic elasticity theory the stress-strain state of a rotating pulsar is investigated. The assumptions are: (1) all the matter is in the solid state, (2) the matter is incompressible and homogeneous with constant density, (3) the rotation is that of a rigid body, (4) magnetic field effects are neglected, and (5) the strains are referred to an origin to which corresponds a state of the pulsar characterized by the absence of shear stresses. An interior solution to the Einstein equations is sought in an axially-symmetric stationary gravitational field with metric defined by Stockum (1937). A second-order solution is obtained, and it is found that the relativistic contribution to the general expression for the elastic displacement amounts to approximately one-tenth the contribution from the Newtonian term.
