Simultaneous photometric and spectroscopic observations of the suspected spotted T Tauri star RY Lup are reported. The time coverage was more than a full cycle of the star's fundamental of the periodic variations. Several overtones and/or superposed irregular variations are possibly present in its light curve. The star was unusually faint and passed through its deepest minimum ever observed. The temporal behavior of the fluxes of the chromospheric emission in the H-alpha, H-beta, and Ca II IR triplet lines is anticorrelated with the broadband variations, as expected within the spot theory. In contrast, the predicted correlation between brightness and color variation is very weak, if existent at all. The stellar photospheric absorption spectrum does apparently not change over the range of more than three magnitudes in the visual. The application of spot models to the photometry leads to solutions which do not agree with the spectroscopic results. The star spot hypothesis would imply luminosity changes (Delta- Mbol greater than 1 mag) on time scales as short as about 2 d. Variable circumstellar dust opacities probably have to be invoked in order to explain the brightness variations of RY Lup.
