Hst Proposal Id #6636 Stellar Populations
Scientific paper
M32 has been the focus of exhaustive ground-based spectroscopic andphotometric studies to determine its stellar content. No consensushas yet emerged on either its mean age or metallicity. M32 is key tounderstanding stellar populations in early type galaxies and learninghow to model the integrated light of more distant systems, regardlessof whether or not its stellar population is typical, because it can beobserved both as an integrated light system and as resolved stars. This proposal will investigate the questions of age and metallicity ofM32 using the unique capabilities of HST to obtain UV spectroscopy ofM32. The turnoff region will be modeled from combined HST UV andground-based optical spectra in a consistent manner to probe the ageof the most recent epoch of significant star formation in M32.
