Simple approximations to the source function for a spectral line that allow for continuous absorption are proposed for the standard line-formation problem (two-level atom, complete frequency redistribution, plane-parallel atmosphere). For parameters having values of astrophysical interest, the corresponding approximate source functions differ from the exact functions by less than a factor 2.
