Measurements of the distribution coefficient in the system strontianite-aragonite over a range of compositions allow, by application of the Gibbs-Duhem relation, the determination of the activity coefficients of both components in the system. It is concluded that the prevalence and long term persistence of aragonite in the oceans should be attributed to factors other than thermodynamic stabilization by coprecipitation with strontianite.
