A method is described for analyzing the stability of the elliptical stellar disks constructed by Freeman (1966) as models of the bars in SB galaxies. Most of the systems are found to be stable to firstand second-harmonic coplanar vibrations, and their stability to other normal modes is examined qualitatively. The most rapidly rotating disks are identical to certain fluid Riemann ellipsoids, and the stability analyses of the stellar and fluid systems are compared. The application of the Ostriker-Peebles (1973) stability criterion to Freeman's systems is also discussed.
