We give precise definitions for the splitting of invariant manifolds, in
an abstract setting, both from the point of view of Euclidean and
symplectic geometry. We then discuss the relevance of these notions in
the problem of heteroclinic connections between nearby tori, and in the
estimation of transition times along chains of hyperbolic fixed points.
