Increasingly large samples of gas-rich galaxies are becoming available with comprehensive measurements of their spectral energy distribution (SED) from the ultraviolet/optical/near-infrared to the far-infrared/submillimeter regime. The extraction of intrinsic physical properties of galaxies from these SEDs, most especially their star formation rates and star formation histories, requires a realistic modelling of the absorption of starlight by dust and its re-emission in the infrared/submillimeter spectral range for systems with a large diversity in size, morphology, opacity and star formation activity. The SED2004 international workshop on the Spectral Energy Distribution of Gas-Rich Galaxies provided a timely forum for the presentation and discussion of the growing number of alternative techniques and models for the quantitative analysis of SEDs appearing in the literature. This proceedings volume is comprised of 55 papers describing the models and their applications, as well as the basic tools and techniques utilised by these models. The volume also includes observational reviews for the key spectral regimes.
