The analysis by Grechko et al. (1980) of visual observations of the scintillation of stars and planets has shown that inhomogeneities in the index of refraction at great heights (up to 40 km) lead to significant variations in stellar brightness. Results are presented here of an investigation carried out from the complex comprising Salyut 6 and a Soyuz spacecraft of atmospheric inhomogeneities in the index of refraction N = n - 1. The investigation is based on measurements carried out on September 30, 1980, fluctuations in the luminous flux from cosmic sources. Since the refractive index for light waves is proportional to the density of air, an investigation of its inhomogeneities sheds light on density variations.
