The presence of sources of various nature and their variability in time distinguishes the geomagnetic field from other geophysical fields, such as the gravitational and thermal fields. It also permits wider application of information on the spatial-temporal structure of the geomagnetic field to the study of the processes of field-source formation, the internal structure of the earth, and the ambient space. The present paper is a review of domestic and foreign papers which deal with the spatial and temporal spectra of the primary geomagnetic field, and also with possible mechanisms that are responsible for the relationship between the characteristic spatial dimensions of the structure of the field of deep-seated sources and their characteristic variation periods.
