Ground-based photometry combined with the IRAS photometry has permitted a study of the spatial distribution of infrared emission in spiral galaxies of a wide range in Hubble type and luminosity. 40% of the early-type barred spirals are associated with enhanced 10 μm luminosity in the central region. High central 10 μm luminosity is not seen in early-type unbarred or late-type galaxies. It is therefore concluded that stellar bars are important for high central infrared luminosity in early-type spirals. The origin of the high central 10 μm luminosity in early-type barred spirals is attributed to star formation or Seyfert activity or both.
