The X-ray imaging telescope built by the University of Birminham for flight on the Spacelab 2 mission is described in detail. The instrument comprises dual coded mask telescopes having angular resolutions of 3 and 12 arcmin and which respond to X-rays with photon energies in the range 2.5-30 keV. The telescopes are mounted on an independent pointing system so that observations of targets of interest can be made regardless of the Orbiter's attitude. An attitude measurement system comprising a low light level TV camera and a 35 mm film camera, both of which record the images of optical stars, and gyro pack enables the pointing direction of the telescopes to be determined to an accuracy of approximately 30 arcsec.
