The Space Telescope (ST), which is to be placed in orbit in 1985, will make it possible to observe stars and galaxies with a brightness which is only the fiftieth part of the minimum brightness required to see a celestial body from earth. The ST has been developed in a cooperative effort by scientists of NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), and about a dozen other organizations. It is pointed out that the ST represents a revolutionary breakthrough in astronomy which is only comparable to the pioneering work performed by Galilei approximately 370 years ago. The ST has a weight of 10,000 kg, a length of about 13 m, and a maximal diameter of 4 m. The telescope will be placed in a circular orbit at an altitude in the range from 500 to 600. Attention is given to the scientific studies to be conducted with the aid of the ST, the design of the ST, the camera for objects with a low light intensity, and aspects of scientific evaluation.
