It is posited that celestial X-ray bursts are caused by thermonuclear flashes in binary star systems in which one member of the pair is a dense neutron star. Hydrogen is ripped from the surface of the companion star by the neutron star's gravitational field. A continuous emission of X-rays is produced as the hydrogen falls to the surface of the neutron star. Helium is formed by the fusion of hydrogen nuclei and produces a helium layer below the hydrogen. When the temperature and density of the helium layer become critical, carbon is produced by sudden thermonuclear fusion. The resulting flash is seen as a burst of X-rays.
