Current mechanisms of coronal mass ejection (CME) initiationtend to rely on ad hoc assumptions to energize coronalmagnetic fields to erupt. Most notably, artificial shearing ofcoronal magnetic arcades has been employed for nearly three decadesto model flares and CMEs while no self-consistent explanationfor the shearing motions was known. This talk will focus onthe recent discovery that such shearing motions are driven by thethe Lorentz force that naturally arises when bipolar magnetic fieldsemerge from the photosphere into the corona. These spontaneousshearing motions will be shown to produce eruptions in a fullyself-consistent manner in both magnetic arcades and flux ropes. The shearing motions transport axial flux and energy from thesubmerged portion of the field to the expanding portion, stronglycoupling the solar interior to the corona. This mechanismis very robust and explains the highly sheared state of themagnetic field associated with prominences, flares and CMEsand why the field erupts.
