A total solar eclipse was monitored on February 26, 1979, from Red Lake, Canada, through a ground-based and rocket observational program. During the eclipse a geomagnetic storm was taking place, and the middle atmosphere was experiencing temperature and circulation changes related to a stratospheric warming. Parameters such as atmospheric constituents, solar radiation, and electron flux were treated as inputs for a D-region predictive chemical computer code, DAIRCHEM, along with ion pair production rates computed by an E-region infrared radiance model. Findings include predictions of electron and total positive ion densities concerning totality, and the identification of principal routes for increase and removal of species such as O2(+), NO(+), hydrated clusters, and negative ions.
