The construction of the 4 m SOAR telescope has started. The SOAR consortium members are Brazil (represented by the Laboratorio Nacional de Astrofisica /CNPq), the University of North Carolina, the Michigan State University and NOAO (National Optical Astronomy Observatories). The telescope will be installed at Cerro Pachon, close to Gemini South. It is an altazimuth, Nasmyth telescope; the target goal is the best image quality possible. The instruments will include several imagers and spectrographs that can be easily interchanged, since they stay mounted at different ports of the Nasmyth focus. Among other instruments, a 1500 optical fibers IFU (Integral Field Unit) spectrograph will be available, capable of producing this number of spectra, covering the area of extended objects.
