Results of observations of the extragalactic source 3C 273 B made with an interferometer at 2.8 cm are analyzed in conjunction with VLBI data obtained at 2.8 and 3.8 cm. Brightness-distribution maps for each epoch are derived which are very similar at the two wavelengths and show continuity in development from October 1970 to June 1973. It is found that the source appears to be composed of a bright central component plus a relatively long-lived component in the direction of the optical jet (SW of the center) and that 'variable-source' events seem to consist primarily of successive brightenings and fadings of a third component on the antijet side (NE of the center), with little or no motion of that component. It is suggested that the short lifetime of the third component may be due to collisional interaction of its relativistic electrons with thermal material in the optical emission-line region and that the asymmetry between the NE and SW components is probably associated with the large-scale asymmetry of the optical object.
