A new theoretical model for the shadow effect of powdery surfaces is constructed using the autocorrelation function for the optical inhomogeneity of a scattered surface. A formula is obtained for the shadow component of the phase brightness distribution, which is in good agreement with observational data for small phase angles and low photometric longitude values.
