Earth Rotation: Secular Variations

Scientific paper

Since 1960's, more ancient observations have been used to detect the secular change in the Earth rotation, such as Babylonia observations, Arabic observations, Chinese observations and telescope observations from 17th to 19th century. Based on the work of several researchers, the authors expect to obtain more reliable values of the Earth acceleration ω˙ by using their medium results ΔT and selecting proper value of the lunar tidal acceleration n. From the best ΔT series, the authors get ω/ω = (-19.9±1.8)×10-11/yr, ωNT/ω = (8.3±0.5)×10-11/yr (ωNT = ω-ωT, non-tidal acceleration). They divide the best ΔT series into two parts according to the time span: -700 to 500; 500 to 1985. From the fitting results of the two part ΔT series one can see that the value of ω/ω in the two time span has no dramatic change, though its error changes dramatically.
