The variation of the geomagnetic indices AE and Dst and the frequency of occurrence of disturbance day N(D) and quite day N(Q) during the time before and after the earth's passage through the sector boundary of the interplanetary magnetic field is studied. According to the change of the IMF polarity at the sector boundary, the latter can be divided into four types: (1) from negative positive polarity, (2) from positive to negative polarity, (3) from negative to a varied polarity, and (4) from positive to varied polarity. Types 1 and 2 can be regarded as one of the sources of geomagnetic disturbances. After the earth's passage through the sector boundary, the geomagnetic indices increase (but N(Q) decreases) and remain constant after three days. For sector boundary types 3 and 4, the IMF variation and geomagnetic indices are rather complicated. Before the earth's passage through the sector boundary, AE, Dst, and N(D) have already increased and N(Q) decreased.
