Two moderately high-dispersion spectra (15 and 16 A/mm) of the secondary component of U Sagittae were analyzed using a crude curve-of-growth technique and a more sophisticated synthetic spectrum analysis. The results show a mild metal deficiency, the Fe/H abundance ratio being 6.90. However, the abundances of certain s-process elements (Sm, La, Sr, Ce, Zr) are slightly enhanced. The abundances with respect to iron resemble those of metallic-line A stars. No unexplained mechanisms are needed to account for the observed line profiles. It is argued that currently held theories of stellar structure and/or mass exchange in Algol-type binaries cannot satisfactorily account for these results.
