We cross-correlate the DR5 Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) with the XMM-Newton archive to obtain a sample of 1000 quasars with both optical and X-ray spectra. The survey covers a redshift range z = 0.02 - 5.4. 87% of the optically selected objects are detected in the X-rays. For detected objects, we fit X-ray models according to the signal-to-noise, such that a power-law + Galactic absorption is fitted to lower signal-to-noise objects, while models for higher signal-to-noise objects also include intrinsic absorption. The X-ray spectral characteristics can then be compared to the optical spectra. We present the first results as well as future plans for this survey.
