The SDSS-III (www.sdss3.org) Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) is a new five-year project, which commenced operations in late 2009. The key goals of BOSS are to measure redshifts for 1.4 million Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs) to z 0.7, and simultaneously 160,000 quasars at z>2.2. Both samples will measure the equation of state of dark energy to 1% using the Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) technique. Here we describe the target selection of the background quasars, which will be used to examine the intervening LyA forest, and give some early results from the BOSS Commissioning Phase which took place during September-December 2009.
