The scientific payload of the HIPPARCOS satellite, an ESA astrometric research spacecraft, is described. The principle of the payload design is outlined with attention given to the major design features of the optical telescope. The major components of the HIPPARCOS optical telescope include: a Beam Combiner, a flat folding mirror, a spherical mirror and a focal plane modulating grid. The main performance tests and ground support equipment associated with HIPPARCOS are also described. An exploded view diagram of the HIPPARCOS optical payload is provided.
