There exists a significant correlation between the 2-10 keV, excess variance (measured on both long and short time scales) and the black hole mass in AGNs. This relation is consistent with the assumption that the 2-10 keV power spectrum in these objects has a ``universal" shape. It has a slope of -1 up to a break frequency (which decreases with increasing black hole mass) while it steepens to a slope of -2 at higher frequencies. Based on this result, the excess variance measurements can be used to provide black hole mass estimates for AGNs which are consistent with values obtained using other methods.
