SAX, an Italian LEO satellite scheduled for launch in the early 1990s, will undertake spectroscopic observations and timing studies of sources in the 0.1-200 keV energy region; its all-sky monitoring operation is aimed at the study not only of sources' locations, but their long-term variability. Attention is presently given to the satellite's data-handling hardware and software configuration, which must support the advanced data-processing and mission-management capabilities required by the limited (5-min, out of a 96-min orbital period) time in which the satellite is accessible to the ground station.
