Magnetic simulations have already demonstrated fast dynamic reconnection in planar geometries with an ignorable third coordinate. However, the computations have been limited to unrealistically high plasma resistivities, well outside the range of astrophysical interest. Here we extend the incompressible calculation of DeLuca and Craig (1992) to show that fast reconnection can stall dramatically at lower values of resistivity. We argue that our analysis casts some doubt on the physical viability of fast dynamic reconnection in more general planar geometries.
