The use of nuclear power sources in outer space is recognized as being particularly suited and essential to some missions. A risk-informed approach to regulating the use of nuclear power sources in space should be followed to avoid unnecessary impediments to their use. Safety requirements should be based upon realistic estimates of expected risk reduction. .
