The observed outburst behavior of ON + 231 is analyzed with reference to theoretical models. The approach applied is based on: (1) the dwarf-nova model of Meyer and Meyer-Hofmeister (1981 and 1982), involving thermal instability related to the peak in the opacity curve at temperatures where hydrogen is partially ionized; and (2) the model of Lin and Shields (1986) for the long-period outbursts of AGN and Seyferts. For the BL Lac-type supermassive black hole in a thin disk, an S-shaped limit-cycle curve is obtained which accounts for the quasi-periodic outbursts of ON + 231.
