The composition of the upper mantle and the processes creating compositional heterogeneity of the mantle are studied by using bulk rock and trace element abundance data. Tables of the element abundance of Ronda peridotite are presented; these compositional variations are systemic and correlate with olivine composition. A linearity of major element abundance is observed and three models are presented to clarify this relationship. The data provided support the formation of the peridotites by variable degrees of melting (approximately 0-30 percent). The relationship between Ronda peridotites and midocean ridge basalt is analyzed.
