Observations of the Stratospheric and Mesospheric (SAMS) experiment aboard Nimbus 7 are used to show the breakdown development of the mean zonal flow in the stratosphere and mesosphere during the major warming in the winter of 1979/1980. A synoptic description is given of the mean zonal flow and the amplitudes of the planetary waves. The propagation of the waves is investigated with regard to their transport of heat and momentum, and their interaction with the mean zonal flow is computed. Whether the focusing of the waves into the polar cap is a sufficient condition for a breakdown of the zonal flow is addressed, and the importance of the reversal of the meridional gradient of Ertel's potential vorticity for this major warming is examined. The findings are tested using a numerical simulation, and the real amplitudes and phases of wavenumbers one and two at 300 mbar are used to force a three-dimensional model based on the primitive equations.
