This essay gives a concise overview of that part of the History of Physics course at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, which covers ancient cosmologies, the astronomical developments (in particular the astronomy of Aristarchus and Ptolemy), the transition of the geocentric to heliocentric worldview during the Renaissance, and the most important experimental discoveries of the nineteenth and early twentieth century. The main accent is put on the concept of provability and on the aspect of data, in particular precision and accuracy of experimental data as driver and catalyst of scientific progress. The factor serendipity in discovery is also discussed. This is done through using historical experimental data.
A plea is made for establishing a course History of Astronomy within a wider curriculum History of Science.
