Scientific paper

In this paper the distributions of the collisionless Alfvén wave energy density W and the wave energy dissipation term Em of the transition region are calculated based on the full MHD equations taking into account the interaction between Alfvén waves and the medium. From the numerical results, it is found that the collisionless Alfvén wave heating can exceed the conduction heating in a zone of a few tens up to even hundreds of kilometers above the base of the transition region in a region of low density and temperature such as a coronal hole. It is suggested that Alfvén wave heating may be a dominant energy source causing the steep increase of temperature in the atmosphere of a coronal hole.
