Geophysical and astrophysical flows, from the bottom of oceans to the stratosphere and beyond, have a wealth of interacting temporal and spatial scales, due to the inherent non-linearities of the underlying physics, stemming from the advection term but also from e.g. temperature-dependent diffusion coefficients. One possible venue to analyze such flows is in the classical context of the study of turbulence. Recent progress by several groups in this area for the passive tracer has shown that intermittency, as materialised by the presence of strong localised structures and as measured for example by the departure from gaussianity in the wings of probability distribution functions or by the anomalous scaling laws of structure functions, is a key ingredient in the understanding of turbulent flows. A few cases of the role of intermittency and of its consequences on the dynamics of turbulent flows will be given, with a special emphasis on the coupling to a magnetic field in the context of the Solar Wind and of the heating of the solar corona and its correlation with spotty turbulent reconnection processes. For example, using two--dimensional numerical simulations, one obtains clear scaling for a coarse-grained signed measure of the flux.
