The importance of further measurements of the proper motions of early stars out to several kiloparsecs is emphasized. Radial velocity and photographic parallax data of stars within 2 kiloparsecs do not resolve the conflict between the Schwarzchild ellipsoidal hypothesis and Kapetyn's drift hypothesis. Analysis indicates group motions towards the third and fourth quadrants of galactic longitude, supporting the drift hypothesis. However, results merely reflect a highly schematic delineation of the spiral arms and distances of the stars, with typical errors no better than + or - 30%. Hipparcos satellite measurements are expected to provide an ultimate test of the hypotheses.
