Using observed data over many years, the present study calculates, for each month and each air layer, the temperature differences between the poles and the equator and between the two hemispheres, and the seasonal variations in the spin velocity of the earth, and analyzes their relations with the angular momentum of the atmosphere of the whole earth and the change in the length of day caused by solar and lunar tides. The results show that the difference in the air temperature between the two hemispheres is the main cause for the seasonal variations in the angular momentum of the atmosphere, and in the angular momentum and spin velocity of the earth.
