The Roche limit for a uniform incompressible liquid sphere has been derived using a modified version of Kopal's (1978) vibrational stability method. The method is generalized to the case of a radial nonuniform distribution of matter. The incompressibility condition of the sphere is obtained from an infinite set of coupled differential equations. The condition is also applied to the case of a nonuniform liquid sphere with radial density variation, and the results are discussed in detail.
