A theoretical scheme is developed which describes the observed relationship between the parameters of the positive and the subsequent negative phases of an ionospheric storm. The scheme involves a sinusoidal increase in the O/N2 abundance ratio at the beginning of the storm and a corresponding decrease in this ratio after a certain time delay. It is shown that the scheme proposed here provides a good description of the ratio of the integral parameters S+ and S- and of the average duration of one harmonic which were determined earlier from experimental data.
