The energy supply from the solar wind gives rise to two different modes of energy dissipation in the magnetosphere and upper atmosphere, one directly driven by the solar wind magnetosphere dynamo and another more explosive release of energy (unloading process), constituting the expansion phase of the substorm. Manifestations of the driven process are coherent modulations of region 1 field-aligned current, the DP 2 component of the geomagnetic disturbance field and expansion/contraction of the auroral oval. These observations can be explained as effects of an electric current system connecting the solar wind-magnetosphere interface and the polar upper atmosphere. Based on a geometrical model of field-line reconnection on the dayside magnetopause, the current magnitude is expressed in terms of the cross-polar cap potential drop and the conductance of the equivalent total magnetospheric current circuit. The distribution of the input electric current among the different closure paths in the polar ionosphere and the inner magnetosphere is discussed.
