Ground magnetic field and auroral observations in Antarctica during the International Magnetospheric Study were used to examine fluctuations of small scale auroral electrojet current regions and compare them to spatial and temporal variation of visual auroras using three ground stations data. It is shown that ionospheric currents obtained from zero point of Z component magnetic field variations follow movement of the auroral luminous regions. This result suggests that line current approximations are applicable to small scale auroral electrojet currents.
