In close binary systems the hotter component heats the atmosphere of the facing side of the cooler component. The effects of irradiation on the atmosphere of the secondary and on the observed flux distribution of the binary system was studied. Two principal effects on the observed flux distribution occur. First, the emergent flux is increased shortward of the series limit of hydrogen, the most prominent increase occurs at the Balmer limit. Second, the irradiation compensates for the von Zeipel effect at wavelengths longward of 2700A. On the other hand, the von Zeipel effect dominates at shorter wavelengths. To evaluate the results of the computations the eclipsing binary, u Herculis, was observed at several phases using a photoelectric rapid scanner in the wavelength interval from 3347A to 6983A. The observations revealed no systematic variations attributable to proximity effects.
