The observations of Halley's comet made in 1909 were limited to the time it had become a 16th magnitude object, and its reappearance in October 1982 occurred when its magnitude was 24.2, i.e., 1.64 billion km from earth. The recent sighting was accomplished with CCD image detectors, composed of Si components forming a photodetector grid. Each element of the CCD has three states, connected to three electrodes for control and pixel generation. Incoming light induces a potential by the electrodes. The charge is rapidly transferred from the potential well of one electrode to the next when a threshold value is reached. An inverse polarization at the output end charges a condenser and converts the charge packets into successive electrical impulses for a video signal. The principles of an electronic shutter camera are also described. The earlier detections are noted to allow more time to calculate the precise trajectory of the comet before spacecraft are launched for intercept.
