Two color polarization maps of the Red Rectangle are presented which show that the object is a reflection nebula with the dust concentrated on a hollow biconical surface centred on HD 44179. The polarizations in the two wavebands (red and blue) imply that the broad red feature centred near H-alpha in the spectrum of the nebulosity originates in the nebular medium itself and is not reflected radiation from the central object.
