Spectroscopic observations of Halley's Comet obtained during its last perihelion passage in 1910 are surveyed and illustrated with diagrams, graphs, tables, and spectra. The historical background, instrumentation, and chronology of the observations are traced; the energy states of a molecule and the basic principles of spectral analysis are reviewed; and the observations of the head nucleus and of the tail are characterized. Consideration is given to the temporal fluctuations of the cometary emissions, and the significance of the 1910 observations is discussed with a view to the observations planned for the 1986 perihelion.
