The determination of kinetic energy release in the present crossed ion beam-molecular beam study of the reaction of C(+) with HCN at relative energies between 0.62 and 1.57 eV furnishes a measure of the energy accessible to the reaction products, and therefore allows a choice to be made between CCN(+) and CNC(+) products (for which both appearance potential measurements and ab initio calculations indicate large heats-of-formation differences). The reaction, whose large exothermicity is consistent only with the production of the stabler CNC(+) isomer, proceeds through the participation of a long lived HCNC(+) complex that decays in a fraction of a rotational period at the highest collision energy. This further confirms that the exothermic channel is the preferred product.
