Recent microwave and X-ray observations of the impulsive phase of solar flares are reviewed. Two models for the phenomenon which differ in particle distribution are considered: the nonthermal model and the quasi-thermal model. Type III bursts are observed during the impulsive phase; their generation is due to energetic electrons streaming outward through the corona and the interplanetary medium. The mechanism of radiation is reviewed, and recent in situ measurements by space experiments and radio observations are discussed.
