We propose to spectroscopically confirm 45 radio supernova remnant (SNR) and 40 H II region candidates in NGC 6946, identified from a Very Large Array (VLA) survey. This sample of SNRs, along with those already identified by Matonick & Fesen (1997), will comprise a volume-limited sample of over 60 SNRs, all at the same distance from us that is complete down to a limiting peak radio flux density of 20 (mu)Jy. The resulting SNR and H II region samples can be used for statistical studies in investigating global properties of SNR evolution, such as how differences in the environment affect the evolution of SNRs, the shock physics, and star formation. The SNRs from Matonick & Fesen, very curiously, are by-and-large not radio-loud, indicating that the radio selected SNRs in our sample are in more complex and interesting circumstellar and interstellar environments. These differences in environments will be investigated. For this and other technical reasons, we need the large collecting area and high spatial resolution afforded by the KPNO 4-m with the RC spectrograph in multi-slit mode at moderate spectral resolution.
